Symmetricom, Inc. a worldwide leader in precise time and frequency products and services, today announced the availability of the ±40-60 Vdc power supply for the SyncServer® S200/S250. The precise and versatile network time servers that synchronize clocks on computers and servers for large or expanding networks, optimized for the ever-demanding high-bandwidth next-generation networks (NGNs). The Vdc equipped SyncServers, commonly found in telecommunications central offices, are supplied with primary and secondary ±40-60 Vdc inputs to accommodate power from alternate DC power sources. The company also announced a standalone window antenna option that allows the SyncServers to track GPS satellites through a window while maintaining accurate time.
"We continue to provide additional options and capabilities to our high performance GPS network time servers to meet the expanding needs of next-generation-networks," commented Paul Skoog, product marketing manager at Symmetricom. "The new Vdc power supply has been greatly anticipated to accommodate power from alternative DC power sources. Additionally, the ability to track GPS satellites through a window now provides more location flexibility for our customers. For example, in urban canyon environments where traditional roof mounted antennas were not an option, they now are."
For the ±40-60 Vdc power supply, using diode switching, the polarity of the inputs can be different such as (+/+), (+/-), (-/+), or (-/-). SyncServers are sold as AC or DC models, and all SyncServer options are compatible with either AC or DC models.
For the standalone window antenna option, Symmetricom recommends that it is best to place a window antenna in an equatorial facing window, with east or west facing windows being the next best option. Generally the more sky seen, the better, all things being equal. If the window antenna is going to have a very limited view of the sky, or is polar facing, an OCXO or Rb upgrade is recommended to maintain accurate time during extended periods of no satellite visibility. The standalone window antenna option includes a small antenna with suction cup, a 6 foot (2 meter) cable and a BNC-to-TNC adapter to connect to the standard antenna/cable that ships with SyncServers. No special GPS receiver software is required. The window antenna is sold in addition to the standard roof antenna/cable that ships with all GPS equipped models. Depending on user entered position accuracy, time accurate to 5 microseconds to UTC is possible from tracking a single intermittent GPS satellite.
